Treasurer

The Treasurer is a member of the Board with specific responsibility for the financial management, integrity and sustainability of Skateboarding Victoria, in accordance with SV’s Finance Policy.

The Treasurer works closely with the President and fellow Directors to ensure SV’s financial affairs are transparent, well-governed and compliant with funding and legislative requirements, and reports on financial matters at Board meetings and the AGM.

About Skateboarding Victoria

Skateboarding Victoria (SV) is the recognised State Sporting Association for skateboarding in Victoria, responsible for governance, participation growth, safety and the development of skateboarding across the state.

SV partners with local government, education providers, businesses and community organisations to grow participation and deliver skate-related events, programs and facilities. SV raises the profile of skateboarding and delivers great experiences for the skateboarding community by developing the resources, networks and policies that support our partners. SV is a grass-roots, participation-focused sporting organisation.

Term and time commitment

  • Unpaid, voluntary position. Reasonable, pre-approved expenses may be reimbursed.
  • Directors are appointed for a term set out in SV’s Constitution and may stand for re-election (3 years preferred).
  • Approximately 2 hours per week on average, covering the monthly payment cycle, financial reporting and reimbursement approvals.
  • Attend monthly Board meetings, prepare financial reports in advance, and contribute to at least one sub-committee or working group.
  • Occasional attendance at SV events and stakeholder engagements is expected.

Key responsibilities

In addition to the general duties of a Board Director, the Treasurer holds specific responsibility for the following, in line with SV’s Finance Policy.

Financial oversight and record-keeping

  • Oversee all financial operations of SV and maintain accurate, up-to-date financial records.
  • Prepare financial reports for tabling at monthly Board meetings, and annual financial statements for audit and AGM presentation.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations and funding agreements.

Payments and banking

  • Authorise payments in accordance with the Finance Policy and approved budget, as one of two required signatories on all payments from SV bank accounts.
  • Review and approve expense reimbursements submitted by Committee members and volunteers, ensuring claims are supported by valid tax invoices or receipts (the Treasurer may not approve their own reimbursement).

Grant acquittals and compliance

  • Maintain financial records that meet the reporting requirements of all funding bodies, tracking grant income and expenditure separately for each grant.
  • Prepare draft grant acquittals ahead of due dates to allow internal review and sign-off, and support submission in the format and timeframe required by funders.

Governance and reporting

  • Constructively question and challenge management and fellow Directors on financial decisions and activities.
  • Contribute to financial planning and oversee budgets and the efficient use of resources.
  • Support the annual audit or independent review process and presentation of financials at the AGM.

Skills, knowledge and experience

Applicants should have a sound understanding of the duties of a Director, demonstrated through prior Director experience and/or relevant education and training, such as:

  • An Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) course (preferred); and/or Australia Community Directors; and/or Sport Australia’s “The Start Line” online governance course — free, approximately 2 hours: sportaus.gov.au/governance/education
  • Relevant financial management, bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Experience with Xero accounting software is highly preferred.
  • High attention to detail, integrity and reliability in handling organisational funds.
  • Undergo screening prior to appointment.
  • Comply with SV’s Child Safety and Safeguarding policies.
  • Comply with relevant State/Territory child protection legislation, including holding a current Working with Children Check (WWCC).

Desirable

  • Prior experience as Treasurer or in a finance role for a sporting organisation, not-for-profit or community association.
  • Formal accounting, bookkeeping or finance qualifications, such as CPA, CA, or similar.
